The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), established in 1962, is an integral part of the infrastructure of social science research. ICPSR maintains and provides access to a vast archive of social science data for research and instruction, and offers training in quantitative methods to facilitate effective data use. To ensure that data resources are available to future generations of scholars, ICPSR preserves data, migrating them to new storage media as changes in technology warrant. In addition, ICPSR provides user support to assist researchers in identifying relevant data for analysis and in conducting their research projects.

The Prevention Research Center (PRC) of the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation was formed in 1983 as a national center for prevention research. PRC's focus is on conducting research to better understand the social and physical environments that influence individual behavior that leads to alcohol and drug misuse. PRC is one of sixteen centers sponsored by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and is the only one that specializes in prevention.

The Alcohol Research Group (ARG) has been engaged in epidemiological studies of alcohol and health services research since 1959. ARG is the home of one of eighteen National Alcohol Research Centers funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). While the majority of ARG grants are funded by NIAAA, other grants have been awarded from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Institute for Mental Health, the Centers for Disease Control, the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Current research focuses on alcohol and drug use and related problems, health services research, policy analysis, and the study of community responses and interventions. Groups studied include the general population and specific populations, such as individuals in treatment, welfare recipients, pregnant women, emergency room patients, and homeless persons.

The Southern California Academic Center of Excellence on Youth Violence Prevention is committed to the development, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of youth violence prevention programs and strategies that acknowledge the diversity of causes and solutions to preventing youth violence. We are particularly interested in programs that address the unique needs and circumstances of Latino youth, and how ethnicity and culture influence prevention programming. We believe that solutions must come from partnerships between researchers and practitioners that are grounded in both research and community life.
